All Wi-Fi enabled devices have a Wi-Fi radio chip embedded which connects to the base station.  These radio chips have been coming down in price for the last few years. The current cost of these chips is now around $20-$30 CAD. These prices are set to fall further as competition intensifies in this segment of the hardware market. Intel recently announced the launch of a new chip called Centrino and an investment of over $300 million USD in this new chip set. Intel Centrino mobile technology includes features designed to enable extended battery life, thinner and lighter notebook designs, and better mobile performance. With heavy weights like Intel in the Wi-Fi market it is sure to fuel growth in this exciting industry.

Wi-Fi is not limited to the laptop or handheld PDA, in fact Wi-Fi radio chips can be added to any electrical device. Many cell phone manufactures are planning on adding Wi-Fi to their products in the months ahead. As the price for the radio chip decreases you will find Wi-Fi in almost every electrical device from the microwave to the refrigerator.

   Wi-Fi Notebooks and PDA's

Laptops – By 2005 it is estimated that 90% of all laptops will be shipped with Wi-Fi radios and this appears to be taking shape as chip makers like Intel and AMD launch new chip sets to meet this demand. The rapid deployment of Wi-Fi is again a result of low barriers to entry for both the providers and consumers. Next time you look at purchasing a Laptop be sure to get all of the advantages of this new technology.

PDAs -- Another hot selling item these days are PDA's that are Wi-Fi enabled. The PDA market has been sluggish the last few years but is set to grow as the wireless component comes into play. The reason people have been reluctant to buy these devices is lack of service providers and slow processing speeds. As more and more providers come on line, and the performance improves, the sales of these devices are sure to increase dramatically over the next few years. Just as cellular phones had a dramatic impact on productivity and efficiency, Pda's are set to make a similar impact on consumers.
